Zenith has always stood by those with big dreams and the determination to fulfill them. "Time to reach your star" has been Zenith's creed since its inception. It is not just a slogan but a comprehensive philosophy and approach that has been reflected in all the brand's activities since its beginning.

It all started with Georges Favre-Jacot. Georges Favre-Jacot was a 19th-century visionary who dreamed of creating the most accurate watches ever made. At the age of just 22, he founded the first integrated watchmaking manufacture in Switzerland. One night, as Georges Favre-Jacot finished the final details of a new chronometric caliber, which later won numerous awards, and was heading home, he looked up at the star-filled night sky. It was then he realized he had reached his peak and touched his star. He had reached his zenith, the highest point in the sky. At that moment, the young watchmaker decided to name the emerging caliber and his entire manufacture Zenith, after the term denoting the peak of a star's trajectory.

El Primero: The Legendary Chronograph Movement

In the 1960s, the demand for automatic watches was growing, reflecting the era's interest in modern technology and convenience. To celebrate its centenary, Zenith set out to create the first automatic chronograph, which was unprecedented at the time. But as Zenith promised, so it delivered, developing an entirely new high-frequency movement that pushed the boundaries of precision. The El Primero movement was launched on January 10, 1969, and was the first high-frequency automatic chronograph, operating at a frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour (5 Hz), allowing it to measure time to the nearest tenth of a second. This achievement was the result of seven years of intensive research. This legendary caliber set new standards in precision and durability and became a revolutionary feat in watchmaking, garnering 2,333 chronometric awards to date.

Challenges and Competition

There was a fierce race to see who would introduce the automatic chronograph first. It was a matter of great prestige. Key players such as Seiko and the Chronomatic group (including brands like Breitling and Heuer) joined the fray. Despite the tough competition, Zenith triumphed and publicly unveiled El Primero. The high frequency and innovative design of this movement allowed it to surpass its competitors and become a symbol of Swiss watchmaking artistry.

Resilience in Tough Times

The advent of quartz watches in the 1970s posed a significant threat to mechanical watches. Zenith's manufacture also faced internal challenges when it was acquired by Zenith Radio Corporation, which decided to focus on quartz watch production and destroy the legendary El Primero. Even though the times were not favorable for the return of mechanical watches, the manufacture's master Charles Vermot, who was devoted to them, secretly preserved the tools and plans needed to produce El Primero. This act saved not only the movement but also the legacy of Swiss watchmaking.

Revival and Recognition

In the 1980s, demand for automatic chronographs rose again, primarily thanks to brands like Ebel and Rolex. El Primero was given new life as Rolex equipped its Daytona model with it, confirming the movement's reputation. Through this partnership and the efforts of Zenith's new management, El Primero was led to a renaissance and became an inseparable part of Zenith's heritage.

Continuous Development

In 1999, Zenith was acquired by the LVMH group, which expanded both the manufacture and the functions of El Primero, adding complications such as the tourbillon and perpetual calendar. El Primero continues to evolve, incorporating innovations like the Striking 10th and Defy El Primero 21, which measure time to the nearest hundredth of a second, demonstrating Zenith's ongoing commitment to precision and technological advancement.

Legacy of Precision

El Primero remains a testament to Zenith's innovation and resilience. It is a symbol of precision in the watchmaking world, continually pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the field of mechanical watches.

The Present and Future of Zenith

Zenith inspires people to pursue their dreams and turn them into reality despite all obstacles. As early as its founding year in 1865, Zenith became the first watchmaking manufacture in the modern sense and its watches participated in adventures undertaken by extraordinary individuals who dreamed big and strived to achieve the impossible—from Louis Blériot's flight across the English Channel to Felix Baumgartner's record-breaking skydive from the stratosphere. Zenith remains true to its star, succeeding by surrounding itself with people who share the same passion and exert tireless effort, such as tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou and world-renowned DJ Carl Cox. Zenith continues to be guided by the star of innovation, offering exceptional in-house movements in all its watches. It consistently pushes the boundaries of what is possible, whether it was the first automatic chronograph El Primero, the fastest chronograph measuring to the nearest hundredth of a second El Primero 21, or the Inventor model, which reimagines the regulating mechanism by replacing more than 30 parts with a single monolithic element. Since 1865, Zenith has been shaping the future of Swiss watchmaking and standing by those who dare to surpass themselves and break barriers.

The right time to reach your star is now.
