Zenith's 160th anniversary brought not only celebrations but also a watchmaking demonstration of uncompromising technical excellence. On the occasion of this historic milestone, the Manufacture presents a trio of chronographs in ceramic. This entire trilogy captures the brand's unceasing pursuit of high precision and cutting-edge innovation in materials.
The anniversary edition consists of the following three models: CHRONOMASTER Sport, DEFY Skyline Chronograph and PILOT Big Date Flyback. Each of them forms a mainstay of Zenith's chronograph mastery and is now presented newly rendered in Zenith's exclusive blue ceramic. 160 numbered pieces of each model will be produced in this blue ceramic jacket. These anniversary references are much more than just a visual statement. They are technical showcases that offer today's collectors the best that modern watchmaking can provide the wearer: robust and extremely precise movements, fast time display mechanisms and wearability that has adapted to a lifestyle of high pace and commitment.
Here's a closer look at the mechanical innovations behind this trio.
CHRONOMASTER SPORT 160th Anniversary Edition
Reference: 49.3102.3600/51.M3100
Machine: El Primero 3600, automatic
Frequency: 5 Hz (36,000 semi-frequencies/hour)
Running reserve: 60 hours
Precision of chronograph measurement: to the tenth of a second
The CHRONOMASTER Sport watch is the modern embodiment of the Zenith high-frequency chronograph.
It is equipped with the El Primero 3600 calibre, an evolution of the iconic 1969 movement and can be
boasts a unique capability: the chronograph's central seconds hand completes a full revolution in 10 seconds. This high-speed movement allows time readings to the tenths of a second, which are directly marked on the lunette's own scale.
From a technical point of view, the architecture of the El Primero 3600 uses a horizontal clutch and a column wheel, traditional elements that enable the smooth operation of the stop button and mechanical reliability. The stopwatch mechanism allows for precise time synchronisation, which enhances technical usability and collector appeal.
The watch is housed in a 41 mm case made of blue ceramic. This material has been patented by Zenith. The model offers both useful sports functions and an elegant design. The ceramic itself is not lacquered or coated, but is integrally pigmented during production, which ensures the colour fastness and scratch resistance of the material. The alternately brushed and polished surfaces of the case and bracelet are meticulously finished, proving that the use of ceramic is not at the expense of luxurious details.
The dial retains the familiar layout, including three circular sub-dials in contrasting tones that partially overlap. In the current reference, the sub-dials have a sunburst finish. The dial offers a date indicator at the 4:30 position. Through the case's transparent dial, you can observe the oscillating weight with 160 years inscription, which is made in-house and has a satin finish.
DEFY Skyline Chronograph 160th Anniversary Edition
Reference: 49.9502.3600/51.I001
Machine: El Primero 3600, automatic Frequency: 5 Hz (36 000
semi-frequencies/hour)
Running reserve: 60 hours
Precision of chronograph measurement: to the tenth of a second
The DEFY Skyline Chronograph has functions similar to the CHRONOMASTER Sport model. Again, it is a highly accurate and functional chronograph with an El Primero movement, but this model presents a radically different aesthetic and ergonomics. The case has a diameter of 42 mm, but the angular integrated design of the bracelet makes it look compact. It is crafted from the same blue ceramic as the CHRONOMASTER Sport, but the DEFY Skyline model emphasises its architectural sharpness. This reflects the design ethos of the original DEFY model from 1969. The bracelet has end caps that allow for quick replacement, and the watch comes with both a ceramic pull and a textured rubber strap. The latter is adorned with a repeating four-pointed star motif, which is a symbol of the Zenith brand.
The dial is distinguished by a base decorated with a geometric engraving with a repeating pattern of stars. It is reminiscent of guilloché decoration, but it is laser engraving, which guarantees the visual depth and texture under different lighting conditions. The transparent sapphire crystal dial reveals a chronograph movement with a pin-step wheel, and the oscillating mass also features a hand-engraved
inscription honouring the 160th anniversary of the brand.
Other enhancements include a screw-down crown that guarantees increased water resistance (up to 100 metres),
the SLN C1 Super-LumiNova luminescent hands and indexes, and last but not least, the aperture with
date display, located at the 4:30 position. The use of silicon in the stepper improves the antimagnetic
chronograph's antimagnetic properties and increases its long-term durability.
PILOT Big Date Flyback 160th Anniversary Edition
Reference: 49.4002.3652/51.I009
Machine: El Primero 3652, automatic
Frequency: 5 Hz (36,000 semi-frequencies/hour)
Running reserve: 60 hours
Main complication: flyback chronograph + two-digit date indicator
PILOT Big Date Flyback is probably the most technically advanced model in this trio. It is powered by the El Primero calibre 3652, which is a sophisticated adaptation of the El Primero base, but incorporates both a patented date display mechanism and a flyback chronograph function.
The two-digit date display function uses a two-disc architecture with a flexible mechanism that allows for an instantaneous date change in just 0.007 seconds. This surprising speed ensures that the date changes without any delay or mismatch of numbers on the disks. The pointer's fast activation system is driven by a system of flexible arms that absorb kinetic loads and immediately re-engage when activated. This is a technical achievement that is rare even in haute horlogerie. The flyback function is a reference to the tradition of pilot's chronographs and allows the chronograph to be reset and restarted at the touch of a button. This simplifies the timing of intervals for navigation or for following flight paths. The operation of the flyback, controlled by a pinwheel and clutch system, can be observed through a transparent dial.
In terms of aesthetics, this model takes into account the codes common in pilot's watches, so you'll find oversized Arabic numerals coated with SLN C1 luminescence, a textured wavy dial whose finish guarantees optimal legibility, and rectangular buttons that are intuitive to use. The 42.5mm ceramic case with a microcrushed finish is followed by a titanium crown and a pair of Cordura-effect rubber straps (blue and white). The straps can be easily changed thanks to the integrated quick-change system.
How blue ceramics are made: a material that presents a challenge
The development of coloured ceramics in non-neutral shades presents significant challenges. Take the blue: Unlike black or white ceramics, which are relatively easy to pigment, blue requires the development of a special blend to keep the colour stable and rich. Zenith's engineers have worked closely in this regard
worked closely with materials experts to create a blend that would maintain the depth of color and
while resisting high-pressure sintering, i.e. sintering of powders, and extreme temperatures during production. Each component of the ceramic case, whether it is a case, lunette, bracelet link, or button, is individually formed, sintered, machined, and finished by hand to achieve alternating glossy and matte textures. The result is a durable and hypoallergenic surface that rivals precious metals in terms of luxurious appearance while offering enhanced long-term wearability.
One manufactory, many expressions
Despite their diverse aesthetics and intended uses, all three have
models share a common DNA, which lies in high-frequency timekeeping using in-house El Primero chronograph calibers, high-end materials, and engineering fine-tuned down to the micron
precision. These models are not just conceptual homages - they are fully realized, technically
advanced tools for everyday wear.
Each piece in this trio of blue ceramic watches is water resistant to 100 meters with chronograph accuracy certified to 1/10th of a second (where applicable) and offers COSC-level accuracy along with a 60-hour power reserve. Each piece is also marked with commemorative engraved "160th Anniversary" inscriptions on the rotor and comes in exclusive gift packaging. Whether seen as a milestone for collectors, a technical standard, or simply as proof of Zenith's enduring role at the forefront of mechanical watchmaking, this series emphasises one key rule: precision is not just about timekeeping, but about mastering it.
